Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. This day is celebrated all over the country even outside the country by the followers of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi Ji was the practitioner of Ahinsa (Non Violence) so this day is also celebrated as the International Day of Non Violence by the United Nations. Gandhi Jayanti will be observed on October 2, 2022.
Mahatma Gandhi: History and Life Journey
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar city of Gujrat. Mahatma Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi later he known as Mahatma Gandhi. He completed his education and got law degree from London and then he went to South Africa to practice further.
In south Africa, the situation of Indians were not so good as they were treated badly due to their dark skin. He contributed his efforts and tried to improve the situation of Indians.
After all this, he came back to India and joined Indian National Congress. He then started many movements like Dandi March, Quit India Movement and Non Cooperation Movement, Satya Grah etc to attain freedom from Britishers, who were ruling India at that time.
Mahatma Gandhi has played a vital role in getting freedom from the Britishers. Mahatma Gandhi is considered as the great leader, who fought without any weapon and at last sacrificed his life for the betterment of this country.
Gandhi travelled various parts of India to motivate the countrymen and fight against British rule. In Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat, in 1951, he established an ashram, which was common to all castes and religions.
Mahatma Gandhi dedicated his whole life for the welfare of this country and people. Celebrating his birth anniversary is just a small tribute to honour his work, dedication and sacrifice.
His belief in truth and non-violence and his own determination to live life on these terms has a message for everyone. He asserted that we must discipline ourselves spiritually to achieve anything in life. His life also carries the message of ‘simple living, high thinking’.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated all over country and people light a candle in the remembrance of the Father of the Nation. President, Prime Minister and other senior leaders visit Raj Ghat and pay their tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by offering flowers and lighting a candle. Raj Ghat is the place where he was cremated. The government of India also declared 2nd October as a dry day, which means, selling and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on this day.
Many cultural events and activities are conducted in schools, colleges and other prominent places on this day. Everyone has their own different way to show their respect towards him such as organising a play, skit, preparing a speech, poems and singing the songs which are dedicated to him. All government offices, banks, schools and post offices remain closed on Gandhi ji birthday.
