History & Significance of World Environment Day

One of the biggest and the most celebrated events organised by the United Nations is World Environment Day. The United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972 after discussions on environment-related issues during the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The day was first observed two years later in 1974 in the US.

The theme of the first World Environment Day was  'Only One Earth'. In 1987, the idea of rotating the centre of these activities started so that different countries can get the opportunity to host the event. Then onwards, the event is celebrated by different host countries.

The event is celebrated across the globe to spread awareness about the need and significance of nature and frondescence. On this day, governments and normal citizens of various countries and states emphasise a particular environmental issue to generate mass awareness.

As per the UN, World Environment Day gives an opportunity to prove oneself as a responsible citizen by showing eagerness and willingness to help in enhancing and preserving mother nature.
